CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Kyle

I walk slowly to Daisy’s front door in an effort to avoid all animals. I’m wearing khaki pants and don’t want hoof marks or tongue prints on them before we go to dinner.

The chickens don’t care about me, but I spot Hoss across the yard. He might be a problem. I make it to the front door and stand where he can’t see me on the porch. Then I knock.

The door nudges open about an inch. I pull it open more to Mullet standing in front of me. He bleats.

I wince, and crane my neck to make sure he didn’t call Hoss toward us. Luckily, Hoss is busy scratching his horns on a tree and tearing a hole in the pool noodle.

Daisy appears when I turn toward the door.

“Hey, you look beautiful.” She’s wearing a flower-print dress with her hair pulled over one shoulder.

She steps past Mullet and smiles. “Did he open the door?”

“I guess so.” I frown at the little goat, who tilts his head as if that shouldn’t surprise me.

“If it’s not completely shut, he’ll do that.” She steps onto the porch and closes Mullet inside.

The top of her head comes to my shoulder rather than my armpit. “Did you grow since Saturday?”

She holds up a slim leg and wiggles her foot to show off bright pink high heels.

I admire the way the sun shines on her smooth legs and smile.

She returns my smile as I offer her my arm. We descend the steps together and start toward my Jeep. I’m opening her door when something butts at my butt. I turn around and meet Hoss’s stare. He snorts.

“Shoo.” I shake my hands toward him, and he backs up a step.

Daisy laughs. “He’s being protective, I think. He can tell this is a real date.”

I start to say that the tractor-pull dinner was a real date too, but then decide it probably wasn’t. Tonight I hope to make up for that, along with all the other times I’ve tried to kiss her and failed miserably.

I hurry to my side of the Jeep and hop in. After closing the door, I sigh.

“Uh, Daisy, I hate to ask you this, but can you check if he did any damage to my pants?”

“Are you asking me to check out your butt?”

I laugh nervously. “Well, it sounds bad when you say it like that.”

She smirks. “Turn around.”

I lift off the seat and twist so she can see my backside. A few seconds tick by, and I’m more interested in if she likes what she sees rather than if there’s a hole in my pants.

She laughs. “You’re good. Saved by the pool noodles.”

“Good.” I sit down and wiggle to get comfortable. I may have a bruise tomorrow thanks to Hoss.

“Where are we going?” Daisy asks.

I start down the driveway, glaring at Hoss in my rearview mirror. “Lakeside Landing, ever heard of it?”

“Yeah, they’re known for having really good shrimp, right?”

“I think so. It’s supposed to be really nice, and just far enough away that there’s a slim chance Apple Cartians will be there.
